TOR verschenkt Ebooks
« am: 30. Mai 2008, 12:39:23 »
Hallo zusammen!

Diese Woche: Daniel Abraham - A Shadow in Summer

Kate Elliott - Spirit Gate (Crossroads 1)

Zitat
For hundreds of years the Guardians have ruled the world of the Hundred, but these powerful gods no longer exert their will on the world. Only the reeves, who patrol on enormous eagles, still represent the Guardians' power. And the reeves are losing their authority; for there is a dark shadow across the land that not even the reeves can stop.
A group of fanatics has risen to devour villages, towns, and cities in their drive to annihilate all who oppose them. No one knows who leads them; they seem inhumanly cruel and powerful. Mai and Anji, riding with a company of dedicated warriors and a single reeve who may hold a key to stopping the deadly advance of the devouring horde, must try, or the world will be lost to the carnage. But a young woman sworn to the Goddess may prove more important than them all . . . if they are not too late.
A haunting tale of people swept up by the chaos of war, this is superlative fantasy adventure, rich in texture, filled with color and excitement, masterfully crafted by a brilliantly gifted storyteller.

Peter Watts - Starfish

Zitat
A story of the not-too-distant future, and the exploitation of the geothermal resources of the deep Juan de Fuca Rift in the Pacific by multinational corporations. Unfortunately, all the volunteers who are surgically altered for employment at the bottom of the ocean are psychotic.

Karl Schroeder - Suns of Suns

Zitat
It is the distant future. The world known as Virga is a fullerene balloon three thousand kilometers in diameter, filled with air, water, and aimlessly floating chunks of rock. The humans who live in this vast environment must build their own fusion suns and “towns” that are in the shape of enormous wood and rope wheels that are spun for gravity.

Young, fit, bitter, and friendless, Hayden Griffin is a very dangerous man. He's come to the city of Rush in the nation of Slipstream with one thing in mind: to take murderous revenge for the deaths of his parents six years ago. His target is Admiral Chaison Fanning, head of the fleet of Slipstream, which conquered Hayden's nation of Aerie years ago. And the fact that Hayden's spent his adolescence living with pirates doesn't bode well for Fanning's chances . . .

S.C. Butler - Reiffen’s Choice

Zitat
Reiffen, only twelve years old, is the true heir to the thrones of both Wayland and Banking. He and his friends Avender and Ferris live in a magical world of talking animals, dwarves, and shape-shifting bears but…he lives with the shame of knowing that no one will ever let him rule these kingdoms, that their crowns will bring him nothing but betrayal and sorrow…and that he is powerless. Reiffen will have only a short life of child's innocence, a brief respite from the trial of impossible adult responsibility, the trial of attempting to finish a task he can never complete.

And then he is shown the nations of his world from the peak of a fortress drear and tempted with fame and fortune and his rightful place on the throne of great kingdoms—his kingdoms. He need only surrender his humanity; kill his loves and he would have his childhood fantasy.
He would be granted great Black knowledge, more furious than anything he had ever imagined. He could desire justice…but would have to kill everything he loved to get it. His prayers would be answered…if only he would sacrifice everything he held dear.

Hallo,

Harry Turtledove: The Disunited States of America

Zitat
Time travel doesn't work. You can't go backward or forward; you're stuck at "now". What you can do is travel sideways, to the same "now" in another timeline where history turned out differently. So far, only our home timeline has figured out how to do that. We use Crosstime Traffic to conduct discreet trading operations in less advanced timelines, selling goods just a little bit better than the locals can make. It's profitable, but families who work as Time Traders have to be careful to fit in, lest the locals become suspicious.  Justin's family are Time Traders. The summer before he's due to start college, he goes with them to a different Virginia, in a timeline where the American states never became a single country, and American history has consisted of a series of small wars. Despite his unease, he accompanies Randolph Brooks, another Time Trader, on a visit to the tiny upland town of Elizabeth, Virginia. He'll only be away from his parents for a few days.  Beckie Royer thanks her stars that she's from California, the most prosperous and advanced country in North America. But just now she's in Virginia with her grandmother, who wants to revisit the tiny mountain town where she grew up. The only interesting thing there is a boy named Justin--and he'll be gone soon.  Then war between Virginia and Ohio breaks out anew. Ohio sets a tailored virus loose on Virginia. Virginia swiftly imposes a quarantine, trapping Becky and Justin and Randolph Brooks in Elizabeth. Even Crosstime Traffic can't help. All the three of them can do is watch as plague and violence take over the town.  It's nothing new in history, not in this timeline or any other. It's part of the human condition. And just now, this part of the human condition sucks.

Jane Lindskold: Through Wolf’s Eyes

Zitat
From the wilderness to a kingdom bereft of royal heirs the ambitious Earl Kestrel brings Firekeeper, a young woman raised by magically enhanced wolves who promised her mother their care and her eventual reintroduction to human society. Firekeeper's new companions under the earl's protection include Derian Carter, who becomes her tutor and adviser; her wolf brother, Blind Seer (named for his un-lupine blue eyes, thought a deformity in puppyhood), who is now of an age to leave the pack and ramble; and the falcon Elation, another magically enhanced being, who spent a year as a captive hunter among humans and is adept at interpreting human language and actions. Many nobles dismiss Firekeeper as "little more than a freak," but wolf society proves a useful preparation for court intrigue: she "seemed to have no difficulty interpreting the relative degrees of importance" in social situations. Though she knows she'll never discard her wolf nature entirely, she finds mingling with her biological kind oddly rewarding, especially after dancing and music raise her opinion of the two-legs.

David Drake: Lord of the Isles

Zitat
In a world where elemental forces which make magic possible are rising to a 100-year peak, survivors from the last such peak begin to appear: Tenoctris, a sorceress swept out of the past; the ghost of the greatest ruler, King Carus of the Isles; and the magician who caused the ancient catastrophe.

Danke, David Drake: Lord of the Isles habe ich mal heruntergeladen.
